P.E. & Sport

It is our aim to offer every pupil a vigorous, stimulating, challenging and progressive programme of activity in Physical Education; it should also be an experience from which pupils derive pleasure and enjoyment.

Physical Education is taught for approximately 2 hours per week, which includes P.E., Games,
Dance and Movement.

All pupils receive swimming lessons at Eckington Leisure Centre from Year 3 onwards.

Extracurricular activities in Sport are organised both by teachers and other qualified coaches
who run clubs after school.

Primary school PE and sport funding

In 2013 the Government provided additional funding of £150 million per annum for to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Purpose of funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. The Government however, has outlined the three areas for focus, when schools consider expenditure are ways to:

  • Promote physical education - lessons taught in school by teachers and also additional providers, such as specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches
  • Promote Healthy, active lifestyles – providing extra-curricular opportunities to gain knowledge of healthy lifestyles through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • Promote competitive sport – running inter-school competitions or participation in competitions with other local schools

We have devised an action plan for expenditure, which has considered all three aspects of the agreed areas for focus. We are working alongside our Cluster of schools and our specialist colleagues from Eckington School, to support our vision of providing an enhanced PE curriculum for all of our pupils.
