History
At Marsh Lane Primary we believe that a well rounded History curriculum will allow children to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world
Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for History:
Through our History curriculum, we strive to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and to know more about our past. Our curriculum aims to provides children with opportunities to ask questions, think critically and develop perspective and judgement on different aspects of historical areas of study. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in history, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school.
- Staff follow the knowledge and skills progression document to create a curriculum overview for the year.
- Staff ensure that the key knowledge and vocabulary receives the appropriate coverage within each history unit.
- As much as possible, units are taught in chronological order to demonstrate the changes through history and how they have shaped Britain and the wider world.
- Educational visits are planned where possible.
- Appropriate resources and artefacts are provided to add depth and understanding for each unit.
- Quizzes and recall activities are planned into the timetable to ensure children’s learning is retained.
- Learning is adapted to make it as accessible as possible for SEND pupils.
