Modern Foreign Languages at Marsh Lane Primary
We want children to enjoy learning a new language and be exposed to languages early on. We have therefore chose to explore Spanish and German in KS2 during 2021-22.
In September 2022 we chose to deliver French in both lower and upper KS2, to ensure consistency and progression of the language. We will be following the Kapow Primary French schemes of work to support our lesson delivery.
Condensed French-Progression Overview
We have had language specialist teachers, who have delivered French and Italian. we also have a visiting teacher from the local secondary school, who teaches Mandarin to our Year 6 pupils for half a term. We have also had a 'Chinese' themed workshop with the visiting specialist who delivered a variety of activities to our Year 5 pupils, in preparation for Year 6. The children have loved this experience and look forward to continuing their lessons at secondary.
We aim to deliver a high-quality languages education, which should enable pupils to express their ideas and opinions, understand and respond in speech and writing and communicate for practical purposes. Language teaching should provide the foundation for further learning of languages and help our pupils develop a curiosity about, and a respect for, other people, places and culture.
We have chosen to follow the KAPOW scheme for the teaching of French. The curriculum map and lesson plans provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language to lay the foundation for future language teaching. Pupils explore a more structured approach to understanding grammar, whilst also learning through games, songs, stories and rhymes to make lessons enjoyable and fun!
